Last year I co-founded @1oak.studio, a creative studio based in Switzerland. At the same time I relocated with my family from the Netherlands to Colombia. There was a million things to handle to make this move possible.

One of the most crucial points was to find a way to receive a salary in Colombia, in compliance with local regulations and labor laws. I was stressed out and confused about this for weeks. The fear of not finding a solution was real.

My first plan was to open a company branch in Colombia but I quickly realized it was a terrible idea. The amount of administration work I would have had to handle would have been absurd.

I then thought I could get a local creative studio to hire me in Colombia and then have them invoice my company for my services. This was an equally bad (or maybe even worse) plan. Long story not so long, I reached out to RemoFirst and got a first call with them. From then on, it was absurdly simple.

I filled an online form, entered some basic data and then got onboarded by a local agent in Colombia who handled everything. Within 3 days I had all paperwork sorted out. A couple days later, the first payroll came through, at the exact time they had committed to process it.

I can imagine that for most of you this probably sounds uninteresting, but I experienced it as a little miracle. A miracle that repeats itself reliably every month since then, letting me focus on the part of my business that creates value: storytelling. This service truly feels like a super power. In the years to come, I look forward to building a decentralized team based on talent, not location.
